The Oldest Woman Who Ever Lived and Her Beautiful, Beautiful Hands
A contemporary theatrical performance, inspired by the life and legacy of Jeanne Calment, a french woman who is the oldest confirmed person to ever live. Stilts are worn to examine the idea of human spectacle and celebrity, and how we often elevate a person beyond their experiences and identity to a figure that is remembered more as an achievement by humanity than as an individual. A closed circuit video camera connected to a CRT Television imitates the way public figures are examined and watched and brought into our own intimate spaces, and how we create our own relationships with these people we don't know. Accompanied by narration by the artist's twin sister, the performance consists of an abstract and dream-like reenactment of Ms. Calment's daily morning routine during the last 10 years of her life.
